Michael is currently the Practice Group Leader for the Edmonton Intellectual Property & Innovation Group at Parlee McLaws.

Michael’s Intellectual Property (IP) Law practice at Parlee McLaws LLP involves the preparation and prosecution of Canadian and US patent and trademark applications. In addition, Michael has experience in franchising, copyright issues, and intellectual property litigation matters.

Michael’s ideal clients include dynamic companies which are owned and operated by creative and entrepreneurial-minded individuals. His technology-based clients understand the significance of being leaders of innovation and the importance of establishing their associated legal rights. His most successful clients also know the importance of branding, a business reputation, and the protection of both.

Michael’s ideal clients further include foreign Intellectual Property Professionals who are looking to assist their own direct clients in establishing business and IP rights in Canada.

Before becoming an associate with Parlee McLaws LLP, Michael graduated from the University of Alberta with a M.Sc. in medical genetics, specializing in the molecular pathogenesis of developmental glaucoma. He then attended law school in order to pursue a career in IP Law.

Michael is a barrister and solicitor called to the bar of the Province of Alberta and is also a registered Canadian and U.S. Patent Agent and a registered Canadian Trademark Agent.

In the past, Michael’s scientific, medical, and legal research has been funded by provincial and federal granting agencies. He has presented his research at several national and international conferences.

Over the last few years, Michael has enjoyed assisting craft beer related clients in the rapidly expanding Alberta Craft Brewery Industry.
