Experience

Heather joined Parlee McLaws LLP as an associate in 2016 following the completion of her articles at the firm. Heather has a litigation based practice, with a focus on bankruptcy and insolvency and professional regulatory matters.

With respect to her insolvency practice, Heather generally acts for institutional lenders, creditors, debtors, receivers and trustees in bankruptcy and assists clients on a variety of matters including bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings, enforcement of security (both secured and unsecured), mortgage foreclosures, builders’ liens, and judgement enforcement. As a member of the Restructuring and Insolvency Group, Heather has specific experience with:

• Assisting trustees in bankruptcy navigate technical legal issues in the context of matrimonial property disputes, the validity of security interests, landlord and tenant matters, trust and priority issues, and claim valuation processes;

• Acting for creditors in proposal proceedings commenced under the BIA;

• Collaborating with numerous parties in a large Receivership to create creative and streamlined claims processes;

• Assisting equipment financiers in determining whether leases constitute “true leases” or “security leases” in Alberta with respect to enforcing security interests; and

• Successfully assisting a creditor’s appeal from a Proposal Trustee’s claim valuation in the context of proposal proceedings.

With respect to her professional regulatory practice, Heather acts for a variety of Colleges, Associations and regulated professionals. Heather supports clients with a range of issues, including navigating through regulatory processes and assisting both associations and regulated members at professional disciplinary hearings.

Heather is passionate about advocating on behalf of her clients and regularly appears before both the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and the Provincial Court of Alberta, and has also assisted with matters brought before the Alberta Court of Appeal.

During her time at law school, Heather was the VP Social of the women’s law rugby team. Heather continues to enjoy being active while practicing law and is currently a member of a women’s hockey team and is an avid skier.
