Elen joined the Edmonton office of Parlee McLaws as an associate lawyer in 2016. She maintains a growing practice in intellectual property (IP) law with a focus on the clearance, protection, and enforcement of IP rights, namely patent, trademark, and copyright, for clients in a wide-variety of industries, including technology, oil and gas, health, education, and broadcasting.

Elen counsels and advises business owners on a variety of transactional matters, including the transfer and monetization of IP rights. She also prepares and negotiates contracts such as software and trademark licenses as well as assignment, data sharing, and non-disclosure agreements.

Elen’s experience further includes managing national and international trademark portfolios. She prepares and prosecutes trademark applications, prepares written trademark registrability and infringement opinions, prepares trademark co-existence agreements, and represents clients in opposition proceedings. Elen also instructs and manages outside counsel in the prosecution and enforcement of trademarks in foreign jurisdictions, such as the United States, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Elen has worked in both the state and federal judiciary in the United States, where she analyzed patent law issues as a judicial intern to Circuit Judge Jimmie V. Reyna at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., and later performed extensive legal research and writing during a one-year judicial clerkship at the Superior Court of New Jersey to Assignment Judge Julio L. Mendez, which focused in civil litigation.
