Elen joined the Edmonton office of Parlee McLaws as an Associate Lawyer in 2016. She maintains a growing practice in intellectual property (IP) law with a focus on the clearance, protection, and enforcement of IP rights, namely patent, trademark, and copyright, across a wide-range of industries, including technology, oil and gas, health, education, and broadcasting.

Elen draws on her background as a software developer and her prior studies in computer science to help clients protect software-based innovations. She also advises business owners on transactional matters, including the transfer and monetization of IP rights, and negotiates and prepares a variety of commercial contracts.

Her trademark practice includes managing national and international trademark portfolios. Elen prosecutes Canadian trademark applications on behalf of domestic and international clients, and instructs and manages outside counsel in the prosecution and enforcement of trademarks in foreign jurisdictions.

Elen also acts for clients in opposition proceedings before the Trademarks Opposition Board and Internet domain name disputes involving issues of cybersquatting and trademark infringement.

Elen has worked in both the state and federal judiciary in the United States, where she analyzed patent law issues as a judicial intern to Circuit Judge Jimmie V. Reyna at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., and later performed extensive legal research and writing during a one-year judicial clerkship at the Superior Court of New Jersey to Assignment Judge Julio L. Mendez, which focused in civil litigation.
