Elen joined Parlee McLaws as an associate following the completion of her articles with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre and the firm.

During her articling year, Elen appeared before the Provincial Court of Alberta, Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, and an administrative tribunal, while representing clients in civil litigation, as well as administrative, residential tenancy, and estate matters. Elen also drafted and reviewed software license agreements, terms and conditions, and privacy policies, for sole inventors and small technology start-ups.

Elen has worked in both the state and federal judiciary in the United States, where she analyzed patent law issues as a judicial intern to Circuit Judge Jimmie V. Reyna at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., and later performed extensive legal research and writing during a one-year judicial clerkship at the Superior Court of New Jersey to Assignment Judge Julio L. Mendez, which focused in civil litigation.

While attending Howard Law School, Elen competed with the school’s International Moot Court Team in a national tournament. She also provided legal advice and representation in a U.S. federal trademark matter as a Student Attorney in the school’s Intellectual Property and Trademark Clinic. Prior to attending law school, Elen received her undergraduate degree in computer science and subsequently obtained nearly four years of industry experience as a software developer for a large transnational transportation firm and various government agencies. There, she specialized in the object-oriented design and implementation of business critical software applications using C#, ASP.net, Oracle, PL/SQL, and other computer technologies.

In addition to English, Elen is proficient in Tigrinya.
