In 2011, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the right of senior citizens in long term care facilities in Alberta to sue the Provincial Government as a class with respect to excessive accommodation charges.

Since this ruling, the Government of Alberta has produced a very large number of documents which relate to the issues in the long term care class action. The review process for these documents, questionings of Government of Alberta witnesses, and research on various legal elements associated with the class action are underway.

On January 5, 2015 the class and the Government of Alberta agreed to commence trial of the class action in 2016. It is anticipated that following the close of trial, which is scheduled to last 6 weeks, a ruling will be issued on the merits of the case.
