Parlee McLaws LLP is a well-established law firm with over 125 years of experience here in Alberta and we’re looking for a talented Legal Assistant to join our growing Intellectual Property team to cover for a maternity leave. Position Overview:

• Correspond with legal counsel and foreign associates to provide instructions with respect to filing patents, trademarks and industrial designs, and payment of fees, gathering documentation as required
• Preparing necessary documentation and filing patent, trademark and industrial design applications as well as PCT applications nationally and internationally from initial filing through to registration and issuance (both electronically and physical paper copies)
• Preparing, drafting and sending reports to clients regarding the status of Patents, Trademarks and Industrial Designs
• Maintain all patent, trademark and industrial design files and keep diary system of timelines and upcoming deadlines, updating as necessary
• Enter information into Foundation IP software system for client files, status of applications, and pulling deadline and status reports
• Filing administration: opening and closing files, filing, electronically filing all correspondance, client billing, accounting, booking meeting rooms
• Other tasks as required

Requirements:

• Minimum five (5) years of relative experience in Intellectual Property is an asset; equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a different practice area may be considered
• Post-secondary education from a recognized Legal Assistant/Paralegal program
• Understanding of basic accounting principles
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office programs
• Must speak, read and write English fluently
• Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills
• Exhibit attention to detail and is committed to producing accurate and high-quality work
• Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines with a high degree of personal initiative
• Must be able to handle confidential information in an ethical and professional manner
• Ability to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently
• Strong customer service and relationship building skills
• Readily adapt to changing priorities and effectively work in a changing and high-volume work environment
• Possess problem solving skills with a proactive mindset
• Ability to collaborate within a team as well as achieve results individually
