Parlee McLaws LLP is a well-established law firm with over 125 years of experience here in Alberta and we’re looking for a talented Legal Assistant to join our growing Intellectual Property team. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of legal documents and correspondence based on written, verbal, and dictated instructions
  • Manage incoming inquiries from prospective clients, including gathering pertinent information, preparing conflict searches, and end preparing engagement letters as required
  • Complete accounting related tasks such as preparation of invoices, corresponding with foreign associates regarding invoices, verifying accounts as well as handing trust transactions, cash receipts, retainers, and credit card payments
  • Correspond with legal counsel and foreign associates to provide and request instructions with respect to the patent application process
  • Preparing, drafting, proofreading previously prepared reports, and sending reports to clients regarding the status of Patents
  • Keep diary system of upcoming deadlines
  • Prepare expenses for reimbursement for the assigned lawyers
  • Work within a team to attain results for the IP department
  • Complete other tasks including office and file management

Position Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education from a recognized Legal Assistant/Paralegal program
  • Previous experience as a Legal Assistant
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office programs
  • Must speak, read, and write English fluently
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Exhibit attention to detail and is committed to producing accurate and high-quality work
  • Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines with a high degree of personal initiative
  • Must be able to handle confidential information in an ethical and professional manner
  • Ability to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently
  • Strong customer service and relationship building skills
  • Readily adapt to changing priorities and effectively work in a changing and high-volume work environment
  • Possess problem solving skills with a proactive mindset
  • Ability to collaborate within a team as well as achieve results individually
