Financial Analyst & Assistant Controller
Full time, 1 year maternity leave position
Downtown Edmonton

PURPOSE:

As a member of the Finance Team, the Financial Analyst is responsible for the accurate financial reporting of the Firm’s operations including collection and analysis of information essential in the effective evaluation of the Firm and its members’ performance and providing these results to the appropriate users of the information.

The position also provides assistance and backup to the Controller, as well as sharing the goal of the Finance department in their effort to provide a superior level of support to the lawyers and other administrative personnel of the Firm.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide detailed financial analysis and reporting to the Controller, Chief Administrative Officer and Managing Partner(s)
• Monthly preparation of income and financial statements, schedules of Partners’ Distributable Income and Draws and all other reports included in the financial reporting package provided to the partners of the Firm
• Payment of draws to the partners of the Firm
• Monthly general ledger review
• Record monthly accruals and adjusting journal entries including expensing of prepaids and calculation of allowance for doubtful accounts
• Recordkeeping and administration of fixed asset schedules and amortization
• Other account reconciliations
• Complete daily cashflow statements and report bank line to management along with periodic updates on time and billings during the monthly billing drive
• Supply lenders with monthly statements and compliance requirements and ensure that conditions are being met as per loan agreements
• Report on Firm performance at various levels including overall, departmental and by location/office
• Monthly reporting to Practice Group leaders including billing summaries, practice group profit and loss statements, billing variance and annual practice group profitability analysis
• Quarterly reporting on the hours and rates variance to budget
• Semi-annual analysis and reporting of lawyer performance to be distributed to the Advisory Committee
• Annual detailed cost-rate calculations of all timekeepers and detailed profitability analysis of said timekeepers
• Further profitability analysis by office, practice group, practice code, and client as requested by the Chief Administrative Officer
• Assist Controller with the preparation of the annual operating budget including working with key individuals to compile all required information for a thorough and comprehensive budget
• Maintain complete confidentiality with respect to all information obtained directly or indirectly with regards to financial or other business affairs of the Firm
• Provide lawyers and legal assistants with any information required to help in achieving optimal client service
• System support to legal assistants and lawyers with the use of Elite Enterprise and Webview
• Support and guidance to other member of Finance when questions arise
• Ad hoc analysis and reporting as requested by management and lawyers
• Assists the Controller with year-end, working paper preparation and taxable income calculations
• Backup for the Controller
• Backup for the Payroll & Benefits Administrator including working with electronic payroll system
• Other projects and responsibilities as required

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• University degree in Finance, Accounting or Business
• Professional accounting designation required
• Minimum of five (5) years’ progressive full cycle accounting experience, preferably within a legal environment
• Extensive experience and knowledge in creating and managing accounting systems, budgets, internal controls and business planning
• Advanced proficiency with Elite accounting software would be a definite asset
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel for sorting, organizing and reporting data
• Must speak, read and write English fluently
