Parlee McLaws LLP is a well-established law firm with over 125 years of experience here in Alberta and we’re seeking a Business Development Specialist who will act as a strategic partner to lawyers in our Edmonton and Calgary offices to help develop and drive local business development activities. This role will also be responsible to conduct market research to generate and manage business leads and opportunities, while assisting with marketing and branding strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Business Development

• Support Edmonton and Calgary Partners and Associates by driving an annual business development planning process (by practice and by individual) and managing follow-up throughout the year
• Conduct market research to identify strategic sales opportunities and drive lead generation
• Document and report on account activities, including business development, ongoing relationship management and pipeline analysis
• Identify opportunities to build brand awareness and client loyalty, including client seminars, association memberships and industry sponsorships
• Research and attend Edmonton and Calgary events and/or activities as a representative of Parlee McLaws; relaying any relevant information to the Firm within the appropriate practice
• Working with the CAO, help identify, evaluate and pursue speaking, publication and media opportunities
• Respond to pitch/RFP opportunities, including customizing experience and presentation materials to address target’s needs/concerns
• Provide guidance and coaching in business development skills, at both the individual and team levels
• Manage client relationships by maintaining communication through various forms both during and post-sale, and within various levels of the organization, in order to build long-term relationships


• Research opportunities and prepare competitive intelligence reports for existing clients and prospects
• Identify trade shows, professional associations, publications/editorial calendars and speaking engagement related to specific practices or industries for marketing opportunities
• Conduct additional research and analytics to support lead generation and follow-through across the relevant market
• Monitor and provide a yearly summary on economic outlook, growth and new business opportunities


• Responsible for production of brochures and other print materials as well as electronic materials for marketing products and/or services (e.g., newsletters, mail outs, forms, blogs, social media, etc.)
• Assist in developing marketing and branding strategies to build a strong brand and position
• Participate in planning and attending events that promotes the Firm’s services (e.g., tradeshows, professional associations, speaking engagements, etc.)

Position Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Communications, PR or related field
• Minimum five (5) years of business, marketing or sales in a professional services environment
• A strong understanding of our clients’ objectives and the business community and climate in Edmonton and Calgary
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office programs
• Must speak, read and write English fluently

The successful candidate must be willing to travel within Alberta and possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and vehicle.
